Medical professionals and training organisations have a new tool to easily manage their professional development events with the launch of the SimpleCPD app.

SimpleCPD, which launched this month, provides an end-to-end digital workflow for both training providers and attendees to accurately and efficiently capture their continuing professional development (CPD) activities.

The concept for SimpleCPD came from Ōtautahi Christchurch Anaesthetist, Dr Christian Brett. As both an educator and a clinician, Dr Brett became frustrated with the inconvenience of manual attendance records and the inadequacies of a DIY learning record in a time-poor environment. Dr Brett designed SimpleCPD to help individuals and organisations meet recertification requirements.

Dr Brett took his product idea to the New Zealand Health Innovation Hub (NZHIH), a Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand entity which is responsible for the commercialisation of innovative products or services to improve health outcomes.

NZHIH selected Ōtautahi Christchurch-based health tech company Webtools to develop the product with Dr Brett.

With proven delivery of innovative technology solutions for the health sector, Webtools was able to rapidly develop and deploy the SimpleCPD app in just two months.

Educators and administrators can login to the SimpleCPD web console and set up a new event with all the relevant programme details. They can then generate a unique, time stamped QR code to display at the event. Attendees simply scan in using the SimpleCPD mobile app to register their attendance with the organiser and also populate their personal digital learning record with the event details.

From the app, healthcare professionals can generate and share certificates of attendance with their registering authority, as well as produce a personal learning record of their CPD activities over time.

SimpleCPD is currently being used in the health sector, with the potential to expand into other workplaces and professions with ongoing education and training requirements.

Webtools works largely in the health industry to build frictionless digital solutions which solve problems and drive change. In 2022, Webtools launched their Centrik platform to improve how health information is accessed and shared, and drive better health outcomes for patients. Webtools has since partnered with Aotearoa’s largest primary care provider, Green Cross Health, to roll out their patient app – powered by Centrik – across Green Cross Health’s national network of 60 medical centres. Webtools is also the team behind the Āwhina app, a tool delivered with Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand for healthcare workers to stay up-to-date.
